July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. It is a month dedicated to celebrating diversity and promoting the visibility and inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society.

A Brief History of Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a major civil rights milestone signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a crucial civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places open to the general public. The ADA has been instrumental in breaking down barriers and ensuring that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Each year, Disability Pride Month serves as a reminder of the progress made since the ADA’s passage, while also highlighting the ongoing fight for equality and accessibility. It is a time to reflect on the importance of inclusion and to celebrate the contributions and resilience of the disability community.

At The Mission Project, we believe that disability is not inability. Because of this, our mission is to foster independence and empower individuals with disabilities to lead fulfilling and autonomous lives. Through our programs, participants gain valuable life skills, build strong social connections, and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.

Disability Pride Month is not only a celebration but also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality and accessibility for everyone. It’s a call to action for all of us to advocate for change, challenge stereotypes, and support initiatives that uplift the disability community.
