Celebrating National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions, talents, and voices of individuals with developmental disabilities—and to reaffirm our commitment to building inclusive communities where everyone can thrive.
At The Mission Project, this month is more than awareness. It’s a reminder of what’s possible when adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have access to meaningful employment, independent living opportunities, and strong community connections.
Moving Beyond Awareness to Action
True inclusion goes beyond recognition—it requires opportunity.
Adults with developmental disabilities continue to face barriers to employment, housing, transportation, and social connection. Through employment support, independent living programs, transportation coordination, and social engagement opportunities, The Mission Project works every day to remove those barriers.
Our participants don’t just receive support—they contribute to workplaces, strengthen neighborhoods, build friendships, and advocate for themselves. They are employees, neighbors, leaders, and friends.
I
ndependence, Inclusion, and Community
National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month highlights the importance of full participation in community life. Independence looks different for everyone, but at its core, it means having choices, a voice, and access to opportunity.
At The Mission Project, we see independence in action:
-
Participants maintaining meaningful employment
-
Individuals living in their own apartments
-
Self-advocates speaking at the State Capitol
-
Friendships forming through shared experiences
These milestones represent progress—not just for individuals, but for our entire community.
How You Can Support Disability Inclusion
Awareness month is an invitation. Here are ways you can help promote inclusion:
-
Support businesses that employ individuals with disabilities
-
Advocate for policies that expand access and opportunity
-
Volunteer or partner with local nonprofits
-
Make a donation to organizations advancing independent living and workforce development
Every action helps build a more inclusive Kansas City.
As we recognize National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and leadership of the individuals we serve. Together, we can continue creating a community where every person has the opportunity to live, work, and belong.
